  • Tell us about what you submitted for the show and your chosen medium.

I'm showing a lot of sketches and designs on tracing paper for The Royal Red Secret and Fright Flight. It's my favorite medium for getting an idea to the best design form before making color choices. It's a bit messy. I hope exhibit visitors will see that messy can be a creative route to illustrations that are tidy on the printed page.  I use mechanical pencils and kneaded erasers for roughs and ink, water based felt pens and crayons for finals.

  • How has SCBWI affected your career?

SCBWI gave me hope and direction!  Meeting SCBWI members, particularly at the Bologna, Italy international conference, made the career change to children's author/illustrator a reality. The thoughtful advice freely shared by world famous kid-lit authors and illustrators like Jon Sciezka, David Wiesner, Laurie Halse Anderson is a constant reminder to get cracking and never give up.

  • Which illustrators have influenced you?

I am inspired by Anita Lobel, Shaun Tan, Garth Williams and Lois Lenski. To my eye they illustrate direct and honest emotion with fantastically good drawing and design skills. No one forgets the Garth Willams' drawings for Charlotte's Web! Also, I am inspired by 13th and 14th century Italian artists like Giotto and the Lorenzetti brothers of Siena. They were the story tellers of the day on a grand scale. Take a look at Giotto's lovely donkeys who seems to be commenting with one glance on the whole story.

  • Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I love to take long trips on the back of my husband's Moto Guzzi motorcycle and snap pictures while he drives. That's me with the camera in one hand zooming across the Golden Gate bridge!

  • Tell us about what you submitted for the show and your chosen medium.

My illustrations begin with miniature characters and scenes that I construct out of all sorts of materials, which I then light and photograph.  I’ve submitted one of these sets.

  • How has SCBWI affected your career?

I learn a lot from the SCBWI magazine and I went to a conference last year that gave me insight into the illustration business, which is new to me.

  • Which illustrators have influenced you?

Beatrix Potter, Russell Hoban, E. H. Shepard.

  • Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I have a black belt in t’ai chi!

  1. Tell us about what you submitted for the show and your chosen medium.

I chose my personal book that was just released.  It is a wordless, fine arts illustrated book about a golden mantel ground squirrel’s life at Oregon’s Crater Lake.  The story changes depending on who creates it and is different for everyone.  You could say I am both the author and the illustrator.

The other books are a representation of the variety of illustrating styles I can create from cartoon to realism and simple to detailed.  There are 6 examples for the public to view and discern the difference for themselves.

My chosen medium right now is Gouache and Pen and Ink.

  1. How has SCBWI affected your career?

It has given me more opportunities to network and showcase what I do to the general public.

  1. Which illustrators have influenced you?

Norman Rockwell is my all-time favorite.  Even my Western Fine Arts work tells a story with every picture.  The stories within stories and his characterizations are what made him great.  That’s what I strive to accomplish with all my art.

  1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

My publisher was at my home visiting from St. Louis, MO for a week.  We went to visit Crater Lake on a day trip.  She said it was awe inspiring and very unique.  She loved it and the idea for my book, Silence, derived from that day.  She is the one sitting on the wall while the golden mantel nibbled on her ring in the book.
