Once again, we are offering One-on-One Manuscript Consultations, Book Dummy Consultations, and Portfolio Consultations with our faculty. These are first-come, first-serve opportunities for you to get an opinion from a professional. You may choose ONE author, author/illustrator, editor, agent, or art director consultation.
Fees: The cost is $50 for manuscript consultations and portfolio consultations, and $60 for book dummy consultations. Fees are nonrefundable.
Individual manuscript consultations, book dummy consultations, and portfolio consultations will be held in the Lewis and Clark room (small room to the left of the main rooms when facing the stage). Each consultation is 14 minutes, no more. We allow 1 minute for passing time.
PLEASE READ complete instructions and guidelines in document or pdf format to know what each faculty member is looking for. Note two local faculty will only be available for consultations on Saturday. These instructions are for all types of consultations (manuscript, picture book dummy, or portfolio):
One-on-One Manuscript Consultations
Author Manuscript Consultations are open to anyone. If you’ve never had a professional critique before, we strongly recommend you choose an author or author/illustrator as your critiquer. See instructions above for more info. REGISTRATION CLOSED.
Manuscript Deadline: March 19th
If your manuscript is not received, you WILL NOT have a consultation, nor receive a refund.
When you register, choose whom you’d like to have critique your manuscript. If you have signed up, but we do not have your manuscript(s) by the deadline, your consultation fee will be forfeited.
Test your manuscript checklist: Manuscript-Checklist.doc
One-on-One Picture Book Dummy Consultations
You must be both the writer and illustrator of your dummy to submit. When you register, choose whom you’d like to have critique your manuscript and dummy.
You must follow the specific guidelines, including size limitations, or you will be disqualified. Please include a separate picture book manuscript (refer to manuscript guidelines) with your picture book dummy. See instructions above for more info. REGISTRATION CLOSED.
Picture Book Dummy Deadline: March 19th
If your picture book dummy and manuscript is not received, you WILL NOT have a consultation, nor receive a refund.
One-on-One Portfolio Consultations
When you register, choose whom you’d like to have review your portfolio.
Portfolios are brought to the conference. We cannot store them for you unless you have entered the Juried Art Show. If you have entered the Juried Art Show and you have a consultation, put your place card in your portfolio space so the judges know to return to your portfolio. See instructions above for more info.
If you do not bring your portfolio to the conference, there will NOT be a refund.
Your Appointment Itself
Appointments are often booked back to back, so please arrive early and depart promptly and graciously when your time is up. Missed appointments cannot be made up, nor can fees be refunded.
Be prepared to answer questions critiquers commonly ask:
Manuscripts: What is your story about? (one to three sentences) What is the genre? Who is your audience? How does the story end? What makes your story unique?
Portfolios: Which do you consider your best piece and why? What medium do you use? What is your background?
After Your Consultation
Attendees may submit material after the conference, according to the information provided on the submissions information sheet in your packet and any other instructions received during sessions. When you submit, refer to your attendance at the conference, and to your consultation. Mention why you think your work might be of interest. Do not call the editor/agent/art director unless invited to do so.
