SCBWI Oregon’s professional series is here to help bring your writing and illustration skills to The Next Level. Whether you’re plotting a novel or perfecting a picture book, our TNL sessions can give you tools to advance your career. All levels of experience welcome.

We meet on the third Saturday of each month at Alongsiders Church (in the Fireside Room down the ramp) located at 2830 NE Flanders in Portland. (On street parking or in the lot across the street). Doors open at 2:15 pm, and speakers start at 2:30 pm. At 3:30 we’ll have a time for Q&A and/or book sales. The series runs from September 2019 through April 2020—except for December—but each session is different!

February Speaker: Jane Kurtz

February Topic: Using the Wide World to Add Zing to our Picture Books

Have you ever wanted to write a picture book about a rock but assumed it was impossible? Check out A Stone Sat Still. What about tackling the unfurling of the universe in a tiny picture book? Read The Stuff of Stars. In addition, nonfiction picture books have really come into their own in the last decade, whether biographies (such as On a Beam of Light) or celebrations of nature (Over and Under the Pond). Jane Kurtz will use these and her own picture books—the older Water Hole Waiting and more recent What Do They Do With All That Poo? (winner of the Oregon Council of Teachers of English 2019 Spirit Award for nonfiction) to show how craft elements such as humor, lyrical writing, and unusual perspectives can collide with the wide world to create unforgettable picture books.

Bio: Jane Kurtz has published nearly 40 books—picture books (both fiction and nonfiction), ready-to-reads (mostly nonfiction), and middle grade fiction. She lives in Portland and is on the faculty of the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in Children’s and YA Literature, where she considers herself a lifelong student as well as a teacher.
