What, Where and When: Ready to bring your writing and illustration skills to The Next Level? Whether you’re plotting a novel or perfecting a picture book, SCBWI Oregon’s professional series will give you tools to advance your career.

Join us on the third Saturday of each month at Tabor Space on 5441 SE Belmont. We will meet in The Annex for all events this year. Doors open at 2:00 pm, and speakers start at 2:15. The series continues through April 2018—but each talk is different, so don’t miss out!

How to Give a Great Reading (Or Other Writerly Presentation)

So you’ve sold a story, and the magazine is doing a group reading. Or you’ve sold a book and are about to headline your own bookstore event. So. Exciting. And maybe, also a little nerve wracking. Come listen to techniques on giving an engaging reading that plays to your own particular strengths. We’ll also chat about the wide variety of public speaking engagements you might be asked to do to help promote your book, and share tips on each to make you feel more prepared—from the way signings work at big box stores to giveaway events at bookseller conventions like BEA. We’ll discuss everything from how to differentiate your dialogue to the importance of glitter pens.

Tina Connolly has presented at dozens of bookstores, libraries, schools, and conferences over the last decade, and is delighted to finally be giving a presentation about presentations. It is so meta she can hardly stand it. She is the author of the Ironskin trilogy from Tor Books, and the lighthearted Seriously Wicked series from Tor Teen. Her novels have been finalists for the Nebula and the Norton. She is one of the current co-hosts of Escape Pod, and her narrations have appeared all over, including Audible, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and her Parsec-winning flash fiction podcast Toasted Cake.
