SCBWI Oregon’s professional series is here to help bring your writing and illustration skills to The Next Level. Whether you’re plotting a novel or perfecting a picture book, our TNL sessions can give you tools to advance your career. All levels of experience welcome.

We meet on the third Saturday of each month at TaborSpace on 5441 SE Belmont in Portland. When you arrive at the main entrance, check the chalkboard for which room we’ll be in. We’re usually in Muir Hall, the Annex, or the Dining Room. Doors open at 2:00 pm, and speakers start at 2:15. The series runs through April 2019—except for December—but each session is different!

SCBWI has a zero-tolerance policy against harassment of any kind. Any violation of this policy is actionable. Go here for more information.

ATTENTION from TaborSpace management:  Parking has become a concern for our neighbors. Please park in the TaborSpace parking lot on SE 54th.  If the lot is full, be very considerate of neighbors’ driveways when parking on the street.

November Speaker: Kalah McCaffrey, Foreign Scout

November Topic: Keeping a Global Audience in Mind

What are foreign rights and why do they matter? An international children’s book scout will introduce you to the process of getting an American book translated into other languages. But what is a scout?? She’ll tell you that, too, and explain her role as a “book spy” within the publishing ecosystem. Keeping a global audience in mind while writing and editing a book can increase translation potential, making it easier for an agent or publisher to help the author find international success.

Bio

Kalah McCaffrey has been scouting children’s books for over ten years, first at Sanford J. Greenburger Associates, and now as the Director of Children’s Scouting at Franklin & Siegal Associates.
