SCBWI Oregon’s professional series is here to help bring your writing and illustration skills to The Next Level. Whether you’re plotting a novel or perfecting a picture book, our TNL sessions can give you tools to advance your career. All levels of experience welcome.

We meet on the third Saturday of each month at Alongsiders Church (in the Fireside Room down the ramp) located at 2830 NE Flanders in Portland. (On street parking or in the lot across the street). Doors open at 2:15 pm, and speakers start at 2:30 pm. At 3:30 we’ll have a time for Q&A and/or book sales. The series runs from September 2019 through April 2020—except for December—but each session is different!

October Speaker: Hannah Holt, Author

October Topic: Picture Book Verse Workshop

Picture book editors often say they aren’t looking for books in rhyme…and yet, every year publishing houses produce book after book in verse. Why? It’s because it’s difficult to write rhyming stories well, and editors can be turned off by too many poorly written rhymes in their inbox.

So, what’s a verse lover to do? In this picture book rhyming intensive, we’ll cover the basics of meter, rhythm, and rhyme scheme, all while talking about ways to find success with your rhyming work. Then we’ll get to work!

As a group, we’ll look at a few famous rhyming picture books and analyze their underlying structure. The first twenty people attending this workshop will also have the option of submitting a page of work to Hannah before the workshop. These pages will be critiqued in a kind and supportive way in class. In case we run out of time, members not critiqued in class will receive a few brief written notes about their story.

Due to the intensive and collaborative nature of this session, critiques will be capped at the first 20 participants. If you signed up for a series pass in September and do not plan to attend this event, please let Judi know. Watch for more info on whether you are in the first 20.

The first twenty can bring the first page of the story for critique. One page per person. Double-spaced text. 200 words max. You’ll be notified if that’s you and given instructions on where to send your work.

Bio: Hannah Holt is a children’s author with an engineering degree. Her books, The Diamond & The Boy (Balzer+Bray) and A Father’s Love (Philomel) weave together her love of language and science. Her first two picture books are both written in verse! Hannah is represented by Jennifer March Soloway of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency.
