We meet on the third Saturday of each month at Tabor Space on 5441 SE Belmont in Portland. Doors open at 2:00 pm, and speakers start at 2:15. The series runs from September 2018 through April 2019—except for December—but each session is different!

ATTENTION from TaborSpace management:  Parking has become a concern for our neighbors. Please park in the TaborSpace parking lot on SE 54th.  If the lot is full, be very considerate of neighbors’ driveways when parking on the street.

September Speaker: Kerry Sparks, Literary Agent

September Topic: Crafting a Career in Book Publishing

There is no one way to have a long-term career in book publishing but there are things you can do early on to set yourself up for success. Finding the right agent, understanding contracts and deal points, being involved as a reader/consumer and not just a writer are all key, but most importantly, the only thing you can really control is the quality of your work. The rest often is outside of your control. We’ll discuss writing craft in the way it relates to selling your book (how you talk about your book, the pitch, the comp titles) and less in the way of an actual writing workshop. We’ll talk about what a publishing contract looks like, foreign and film and other subrights, go through all the various deal points when negotiating with an editor and what they mean, etc. With plenty of time for Q&A, bring your specific and general questions with you for a lively discussion of the business of creativity!

Kerry Sparks has been at Levine Greenberg Rostan Literary for over a decade. In her time there she has built up the kid’s lit department and the agency wide digital initiative. A few of her clients include NYT and International Bestselling author Jennifer Niven, National Book Award Finalist Carrie Arcos, bestselling author Susan Wittig Albert, illustrator and author Mark Pett, novelist Camille Perri, and a robust list of Jennifers—Jenny Torres Sanchez, Jennifer Mathieu, Jenny Lundquist, Jennifer Mann, and Jennifer Gray Olson to name a few. She is looking for fiction that is the perfect combination of a great hook and solid writing, whether for adults or younger readers. Kerry grew up in rural Oregon town before heading to California for college. She graduated with honors from California State University, Los Angeles with a degree in English, where she also published short stories and wrote and produced plays. After a decade in Manhattan, Kerry now heads up the LGR Oregon outpost in Portland where she lives with her husband and two young daughters. Kerry is the co-author of the hipster baby name book Hello, My Name Is Pabst and will gladly help clients name their characters when necessary. She tweets about books, babies, and all sorts of other things at @kerry_sparks.
